About Eugene Buddhist Priory
Eugene Buddhist Priory is a Soto Zen temple founded in 1973 as part of the Order of Buddhist Contemplatives, an international community rooted in the teachings of Reverend Master Jiyu-Kennett. Located in a forest setting in southeast Eugene since 1989, the Priory offers regular meditation, Buddhist services, Dharma talks, and private spiritual counsel to both beginners and experienced practitioners. The community gathers primarily on Sunday mornings for seated meditation, ceremonies, and teachings led by Rev. Hugh and visiting teachers. Members also participate in weekday morning meditation, monthly silent meditation days, reading groups, and temple maintenance workdays. The Priory celebrates traditional Buddhist festivals and offers private ceremonies for life events such as naming ceremonies, weddings, funerals, and house blessings, with a distinctive practice that uses English-language scriptures and Western plainsong chant rather than Japanese forms.
