About Diocese of Allentown
The Diocese of Allentown is a Roman Catholic family of faith centered in the Holy Eucharist, serving over 205,000 registered Catholics across five counties in Pennsylvania: Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Schuylkill. Established on January 28, 1961, when Pope John XXIII separated these counties from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the Diocese operates 78 parishes and provides comprehensive faith formation, sacramental preparation, youth ministries, and community outreach. Under the leadership of Bishop Alfred A. Schlert, the first priest ordained for the Diocese to be appointed as its Bishop, the community emphasizes liturgical worship, marriage preparation, vocational discernment, and social services through Catholic Charities. The Diocese celebrates its spiritual heritage through pilgrimages, youth activities including the Catholic Youth Organization, and various formation programs for teens, young adults, families, and couples.
