About Diocese Of Allentown
The Diocese of Allentown serves as a Roman Catholic family of faith centered in the Holy Eucharist across five counties in northeastern Pennsylvania. Established on January 28, 1961, by Pope John XXIII, the diocese separated the counties of Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Northampton, and Schuylkill from the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. With 78 parishes and more than 205,000 registered Catholics representing over 20 percent of the regional population, the diocese provides comprehensive faith formation, sacramental preparation, youth activities through the Catholic Youth Organization and scouting programs, and extensive community outreach through Catholic Charities. Under the leadership of Bishop Alfred A. Schlert, the first priest ordained for the Diocese of Allentown to be appointed Bishop, the faith community emphasizes formation, vocations, marriage preparation, and spiritual support for families across all life stages.
