About Bethel AME Church
Bethel AME Church is the oldest surviving Black place of worship in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, rooted in a vibrant faith community that traces its origins to 1820 when a small group of Christians began gathering for prayer meetings. Under the leadership of Pastor Emerson Cottrell, appointed in June 2025, the church has recently reopened its historic sanctuary on East Pomfret Street following necessary renovations. The congregation gathers for in-person worship twice monthly on the first and third Sundays, while worshipping together via Zoom on other Sundays. Beyond Sunday services, Bethel offers an interactive Monday evening study group called The Monday Remix, welcoming both members and visitors to deepen their understanding of faith. The church embraces a Jesus-centered theology of liberation and justice, providing a welcoming family atmosphere for all who seek spiritual community and growth.
