About Sisters of Saint Joseph
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia are a Catholic congregation of more than 500 sisters, with roots reaching back to 17th-century France. The congregation began in St. Louis in 1836 and arrived in Philadelphia in 1847. Its Motherhouse is in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, and its stated mission is to unite God, neighbor, and all creation. The congregation’s history is also preserved through its Archives, established by Sister Assisium McEvoy. Alongside the sisters, approximately 600 SSJ Associates in Mission share in the congregation’s spiritual and apostolic life.
