About Shope's Bethel Church Of God
Shope's Bethel Church of God is a Harrisburg congregation with deep local roots in the Church of God movement connected to John Winebrenner of Harrisburg in the 1820s. Its building began as Baumgardner's Methodist Church in the early 1800s, and Barnard Shope Sr. purchased it from the Methodists in 1858 for $400. After that purchase, the church became known as Shope's Bethel. The bell tower was built in 1920 and renovated in 1972, marking another visible part of the congregation's long history. Over the years, thirty-eight pastors have served Shope's Bethel.
