About St. John Gualbert Cathedral
St. John Gualbert Cathedral is a historic Catholic parish in Johnstown and the oldest Roman Catholic parish in the city, founded in 1835. It serves as the co-cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Altoona–Johnstown. Construction of the present church began on August 7, 1895, and it was completed at a cost of $75,000. The cathedral is known for its steel superstructure and for the unusual detail that the cross was placed on the tower before the cornerstone was laid. It is also home to the Proclaim! TV Ministry, which has broadcast the Catholic Mass on local and regional television every Sunday since 1987.
