About Basilica Of St Michael The Archangel
The Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel in Loretto is a historic Catholic parish founded in 1799 by Father Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin, who established the first permanent parish within the current borders of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown. The present church was constructed between 1900 and 1901 through a generous donation from Mr. and Mrs. Charles M. Schwab, and in 1996, His Holiness Pope John Paul II honored it with the title of Minor Basilica. The parish continues to serve the faithful and welcomes visitors to explore its beautiful grounds and rich spiritual heritage, including the nearby Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine and Father Gallitzin's tomb. The Basilica remains an important center of Catholic devotion in the region, celebrating its deep roots in Loretto's history and community.

Service Format: The Basilica offers outdoor Sunday evening Mass at 7:00 PM from Memorial Day to Labor Day at the Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine, and visitors are welcome to attend services throughout the week. Visitor Tips: The Basilica is open daily with extended hours on Wednesday until 8:00 PM; self-guided tours are available, and visitors can explore Father Gallitzin's tomb and chapel house at the front of the Basilica (note the low ceiling when descending the steps).
