The African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP) is a cultural institution founded in 1976 as the first museum funded and built by a major municipality to preserve, interpret, and exhibit the heritage of African Americans. While primarily a museum rather than a traditional church, AAMP serves as a gathering place for diverse communities to explore the Black experience through art, history, and culture across four galleries and an auditorium. The museum presents exhibitions anchored by three dominant themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative, covering topics including family life, the Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law, and technology.
