About Tabernacle Cosmopolitan Baptist Church
Tabernacle Cosmopolitan Baptist Church is a historic Baptist congregation in Pittsburgh, organized on July 4, 1874. The church acquired its Buena Vista Street site in 1913 and moved there that July, taking the name Tabernacle Cosmopolitan Baptist Church in 1915. After a 1936 fire destroyed the sanctuary, the congregation rebuilt, completing the work on December 19, 1943. In the 1930s, Tabernacle Cosmopolitan became known as the “Mother Church” of five area Baptist churches. Rev. Dr. James E. Slaughter has served as pastor since being called in 2001 and installed later that year.
