About Belmont Chapel
Belmont Chapel, located in Newport's Island Cemetery, is a striking Richardsonian-Romanesque structure built between 1886 and 1888 by prominent banker August Belmont as a memorial to his deceased daughter. Designed by the renowned architectural firm George Chaplin Mason and Son, the chapel features distinctive late Victorian styling with rock-faced brownstone, tall dormers, an entrance portico, and a belfry that make it a focal point of the historic cemetery grounds. Originally created to hold committal services for those being interred at Island Cemetery, the chapel underwent extensive restoration beginning in 2020, with support from major charitable foundations and donors, bringing the approximately $2.5 million project to completion. Today, the beautifully restored chapel welcomes cultural events including music series and historical lectures throughout the year, and families are invited to hold burial services in this significant historical landmark. The chapel stands as a testament to both architectural heritage and community preservation efforts in Newport.
