The Seventh Day Baptist Meeting House in Newport, Rhode Island is a historic colonial structure originally built from 1729 to 1730 to serve an expanding congregation of Seventh Day Baptists, one of the first organized groups of this denomination in North America. The congregation originally split from the First Baptist church in 1671 due to theological differences regarding worship on Saturday rather than Sunday and a stronger emphasis on the Old Testament. The building features distinctive colonial architecture with one of the finest interiors in Rhode Island, including a notable "wine glass" pulpit and finely carved balusters, and has been carefully preserved as part of the Newport Historical Society's Richard I. Burnham Resource Center since 1884. The meeting house now serves as an exhibition and event space rather than an active congregation, offering visitors a window into five centuries of Newport's religious and cultural history.
