Established officially on December 15, 1935, as the Blessed Martin de Porres Mission for Colored Catholics, the parish has grown from its original Antebellum house conversion into a vibrant faith community serving Hampton Street in the Historic Waverly neighborhood. The church is dedicated to Saint Martin de Porres, a Dominican lay brother from Lima, Peru, known for his charity toward the poor, sick, and marginalized regardless of race or economic status. Today, St. Martin de Porres reflects this legacy by welcoming all people and promoting spiritual development, social justice, and strong community leadership. The parish offers weekday and weekend Masses in English and Vietnamese, operates a Catholic school, and maintains numerous ministries including the Legion of Mary, Knights of Columbus, youth programs, and a soup kitchen.
