About Cumberland United Methodist Church
Cumberland United Methodist Church in Florence traces its beginnings to the Gate City Mission, started in east Florence in 1865 by Joseph Kershaw and his wife, Sarah. The church says Cumberland was formed from those early meetings. A parcel of land on Coit Street was purchased in May 1866, and the first building known as Cumberland was built that August. Today, the congregation gathers for Sunday morning worship in the United Methodist tradition, with services also available by livestream for those who cannot attend in person.
