About Bethesda Missionary Baptist
Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church in Georgetown has a long history in the Baptist tradition. It was organized by representatives of the American Baptist Home Missions Society, and the congregation originally worshiped in the Lecture Room/Hall of First Baptist Church at Highmarket and Queen Streets. Rev. Edward G. Rhue, the church’s first pastor, was ordained and installed on April 24, 1865. The church purchased land on May 14, 1867, and its wooden structure was consecrated that same year. The name “Bethesda” means “House of Mercy,” reflecting an identity rooted in mercy and worship from the congregation’s earliest years.
