About Bethesda Missionary Baptist
Bethesda Missionary Baptist Church in Georgetown, South Carolina has a rich history rooted in faith and community resilience. Organized by representatives of the American Baptist Home Missions Society, the church began during slavery when believers gathered in a small lecture room at the First Baptist Church. Following the Emancipation Proclamation, the congregation established their own place of worship, purchasing land in 1867 and naming it Bethesda, meaning 'House of Mercy.' The physical structure itself reflects the dedication of the community, as members filled the low-lying land with dirt carried in baskets and built the church together. Today, the church remains a testament to the enduring faith and sacrifices of its founders, with original pews from 1867 still present in the balcony.
