About First African Baptist Church
The Historic First African Baptist Church, located at 70 Beach City Road on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is one of the island's oldest congregations, established in 1862 in the Town of Mitchelville by formerly enslaved individuals seeking to build their own spiritual community. Founded with twenty-five members under Reverend Abraham Murchison, the church relocated to its current location in the 1880s and has since become historically recognized as the fountainhead of Baptist churches throughout the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton area. Under the leadership of Reverend Dr. General Scott Hay, Jr., and supported by Assistant Pastor Reverend Antonio Powell, Youth Minister Reverend Niwar Davis, and Associate Ministers Reverend Lillian Mitchell and Evangelist Ella Chisolm, the church continues its mission encapsulated in the motto "Each One Reach One." Today the congregation welcomes visitors of all backgrounds with open hearts and a giving spirit, offering both in-person and livestreamed Sunday services, and is currently expanding its facilities to better serve the community while honoring its historic roots.
