About Second Presbyterian Church
Second Presbyterian Church in Spartanburg traces its roots to 1890 as a Sunday School mission for mill workers, formally organized in 1891 and renamed Second Presbyterian in 1900. The church moved to its current location at the corner of Church and College in 1907 following a major fire, and its sanctuary was built in 1926, marking a significant milestone the congregation will celebrate during its 100th anniversary in 2026. From its origins serving the mill community through the Great Depression and beyond, Second Presbyterian has maintained a strong commitment to worship, fellowship, and service, expanding its facilities over the decades and establishing numerous mission programs including a soup kitchen and emergency shelter. The congregation today draws members from across the city and county while continuing its Presbyterian tradition of worship and community outreach.
