About Allen Memorial United Methodist Church
Allen Memorial United Methodist Church, located at 800 Decatur Pike in Athens, Tennessee, traces its roots to 1888 when Ruth Sharp began teaching Sunday school in her home. The church was formally established as the North Athens Methodist Episcopal Church in 1905–1906 and renamed Allen Memorial Methodist Church in 1942 to honor John Allen's generous support. Relocating to its current location in 1951, the congregation completed a new sanctuary in 1988 under the leadership of Reverend Ogle Wattenbarger. Today, under Reverend Stephen Yeaney's guidance, the church is deeply engaged in community ministry through its Nurture Team's visits to homebound members and nursing facilities, the active Women of Faith supporting local and international charities, a Men's Group that undertakes community service projects, and a vibrant Youth ministry. The church also supports the Love Thy Neighbor Project and maintains a Bereavement Team that provides meals to grieving families, making it a welcoming and service-oriented faith community.
