About Cherokee Baptist Church
Cherokee Baptist Church in Jonesborough is a historic Baptist congregation organized circa 1783 and described by the church as the oldest continuous Baptist church in Tennessee. Its first recorded meeting was held on April 2, 1783, when Reverend William Murphy was installed as pastor. Through its long history, the church says it helped mother at least seven other churches in the region. The congregation worships in a colonial brick church building completed in 1973, with the first Sunday service there held on April 7, 1973.
