About Bethel AME Church
Bethel A.M.E. Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Dallas, organized in 1869. The church says it was the first church of color in the city of Dallas, and it is now located in South Oak Cliff. Its history records service under thirty-eight pastors, twenty-five presiding elders, and twenty-one bishops. The congregation’s life has included the L.W. Muckelroy Church School, the first Wednesday night Church School established by Rev. Reginald J. Houston. Bethel also serves the wider community through its Good Friday Luncheon, which feeds more than 500 people each year. A youth group is among its programs.
