About Reedy Chapel-AME Church
Reedy Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church stands as the mother church of African Methodism in Texas, with roots dating to 1848 when enslaved people were given land for worship by their owners. The church was one of the locations where General Order #3 was read, announcing the end of slavery in Texas, and later served as a school for freed people. Despite surviving the Great Fire of 1885 and the devastating 1900 storm, Reedy Chapel continues as a vital spiritual community committed to reclaiming, retaining, recruiting, and reaching others for Christ. The church houses one of only two organs of its type in the United States, a remarkable 1872 E. & G.G. Hook organ with 800 pipes originally built for Trinity Episcopal Church. Today, Reedy Chapel remains a popular destination for visitors and continues to host community celebrations, including the Juneteenth observance.
