About Reedy Chapel-AME Church
Reedy Chapel AME Church is known as the mother church of African Methodism in Texas. Its origins date to 1848, when land was given to Black slaves for a place of worship, and the congregation was organized as an A.M.E. church in 1866/1867. Reedy Chapel was one of the locations where General Order #3 was read, announcing the end of slavery in Texas. The church houses one of the oldest pipe organs in Texas, built in 1872 by E. & G.G. Hook. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has received a Texas Historical Marker and Historical Medallion.
