About St Gregory The Great Church
St. Gregory the Great Orthodox Church is a Western Rite Orthodox congregation of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese, located in Silver Spring, Maryland. Founded in 1996, the church serves a community of mostly convert members who have embraced Orthodoxy while maintaining the ancient liturgical traditions of the Western Church. The congregation uses the Liturgy of St. Gregory, authorized by the Patriarchate of Antioch, which preserves forms of Western worship virtually unchanged since the time of St. Gregory in the sixth century. Service Format: Saturday Vespers (Evening Prayer) 6:00–6:45 p.m.; Sunday Matins (Morning Prayer) 9:00–9:30 a.m.; Sunday Sung Mass (Divine Liturgy) 9:30–10:45 a.m., followed by coffee hour. Visitors typically sit for the Epistle and homily, kneel or stand for the Canon (Eucharistic Prayer), and stand during the remainder of services. The liturgy includes hymns, chanted psalms, and lessons read from the King James Bible. Visitor Tips: Arrive during Matins to find a copy of The English Office Noted from the bookcase near the door, or take a bulletin upon arrival that will direct you to proper pages in the hymnal and missal. All visitors are welcome to receive the priest's blessing and antidoron (blessed bread) after the consecration. Confessions are available after Vespers, during Matins, or by appointment.
