About Church of the Covenant
Church of the Covenant is an open and affirming United Church of Christ congregation in Lynchburg, Virginia, with a remarkable history of social justice and racial integration dating back to its founding in 1954. Born from a vision to create a church of young people devoted to serving both God and community, the church played a pivotal role in the civil rights movement, hosting Martin Luther King Jr. at its Lodge of the Fishermen coffeehouse in 1962 and facilitating the city's first integrated public swimming experience. Today, Church of the Covenant remains an intentionally contemplative and diverse Christian community that balances inward spiritual growth with outward mission work to alleviate suffering in the world. Rooted in principles of unity and covenanted devotion, the congregation continues its legacy of fostering inclusive dialogue and community care. Visitors are welcomed to join the community in worship and explore their faith journey within this welcoming, historically significant congregation.
