About St Paul AME Church
St. Paul AME Church is a historic African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Newport News, founded in 1887 as the Little A.M.E. Mission and assigned to the Portsmouth District. The church’s story includes the purchase of its current location, paid in full within two years under the leadership of the Rev. S. W. Williams, Jr. in 1972. The Rev. Donald F. White, Sr. served as pastor in 2007, when the church says its youth department flourished. The Rev. Dr. Oretha P. Cross was assigned as pastor in 2016, becoming the first female pastor in the church’s 130-year history. The congregation has children’s and youth ministries and a traditional worship style.
