About Zion Baptist Church
Zion Baptist Church is one of Portsmouth's oldest African-American congregations, founded in 1865 just two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Under the leadership of Dr. Kelvin E. Turner, the church's tenth pastor, Zion has grown into a vibrant community of faith dedicated to reaching people far from God and leading them to an authentic relationship with Jesus Christ. The church welcomes all baptized believers and those seeking to know Christ, embracing the biblical vision of unity expressed in Ephesians: one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, and one baptism. With a rich 161-year legacy guided by ten faithful shepherds, Zion continues its forward movement through dynamic preaching, Bible study, and numerous community ministries including the Drop-in Center and Visions Community Services Center.
