Monumental Church is a historic Episcopal congregation in Richmond, Virginia, housed in a distinctive octagonal building completed in 1814. Designed by renowned architect Robert Mills, the church was built on the site of the tragic Richmond Theatre fire of 1811, which claimed over seventy people's lives, including the governor. The church's Neo-Classical architecture features a striking dome and a monument beneath the front portico bearing the names of the deceased. After serving as an Episcopal parish for over 150 years, the church is now owned and stewardship by Historic Richmond. Today, Monumental Church remains a cherished landmark available for special events and welcomes visitors by appointment.
