About Coupeville United Methodist Church
Coupeville United Methodist Church, established in 1853, is the first organized church north of Olympia and has continuously served the Whidbey Island community for over 170 years. Founded by Reverends Benjamin Close and W.B. Morse, the church was established at the Ebey home with early vision from Rebecca Ebey, who sought to raise her children in faith and strengthen the community. The current sanctuary, built in 1894 by contractor Howard Lovejoy following a devastating 1893 fire, features beautiful stained-glass windows depicting Christ with outstretched arms, added between 1910 and 1912 in memory of Dr. John C. Kellogg, the island's first long-term physician. The church has demonstrated resilience through challenges, including recent improvements to the bell tower and comprehensive renovations to support live streaming during the COVID-19 pandemic while preserving the building's historical integrity. Today, CUMC welcomes all who seek to experience the gospel message in this historic gathering place on Main Street in Coupeville.
