About Temple Israel
Temple Israel is a Reform Jewish congregation in Charleston, established in 1873 after being informally organized in 1856. It was a founding member of the Union for Reform Judaism and remains committed to the religious beliefs and practices of Reform Judaism. Its cemetery, founded in 1836, is described as the oldest Jewish cemetery in West Virginia. The congregation’s current home was completed in 1960 on Kanawha Boulevard East at Chesapeake Avenue. Temple Israel gathers for Torah on Tuesdays, Teshuvot on Thursdays, and Shabbat service on Fridays.
