About Sisters Of Saint Joseph
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic religious congregation with deep roots extending back to seventeenth-century France. Founded in 1650 in Le Puy, France, the congregation arrived in Philadelphia in 1847 and has since grown to include approximately 500 members serving across twelve states. The sisters are committed to their foundational charism of unioning love, dedicating themselves to spiritual and corporal works of mercy including hospital care, education, orphan care, and community aid services. Today, the congregation continues its mission of addressing urgent societal challenges and the needs of the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. The sisters also welcome Associates in Mission—lay partners who share in their commitment to unite God, neighbor, and all creation through their daily lives.
