About St Joseph Sisters
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation of more than 500 sisters with roots tracing to 17th-century France and a presence in the United States since 1836. Based in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, the congregation operates from their motherhouse and serves across 12 states through various ministries addressing poverty, marginalization, and vulnerable populations. Founded on the charism of unioning love—bringing neighbors together with each other and with God—the sisters have a rich history of service in education, healthcare, orphan care, and community aid since their arrival in Philadelphia in 1847. Today, they continue their mission of spiritual and corporal works of mercy while welcoming associates and lay partners who share their commitment to justice and compassionate service. The sisters maintain an active archives documenting their contributions across diverse ministries from hospitals and battlefields to schools and community services.
