What to Expect When Visiting Holy Virgin Cathedral in San Francisco

Dress Code: As this is an Orthodox Christian cathedral, modest dress is expected. For women, this means covering the head, wearing skirts or dresses that cover the knees, and avoiding sleeveless or low-cut tops. Men should wear collared shirts and long pants. Feel free to bring a scarf or hat to cover your head if needed. The cathedral has shawls available if you forget.

Service Format: Services at Holy Virgin Cathedral follow the traditional Russian Orthodox format. The Divine Liturgy, the main Sunday service, typically lasts 1.5-2 hours. The service is conducted primarily in Church Slavonic, with some English. You are welcome to stand or sit as you are able throughout the service. During Communion, only baptized and chrismated Orthodox Christians may receive the Eucharist. Non-Orthodox visitors can come forward to receive a blessing from the priest.
