About Mission Dolores Basilica
Mission Dolores Basilica is a Catholic parish in San Francisco with deep roots in the city’s history. Misión San Francisco de Asís was founded on June 29, 1776, under the direction of Father Junipero Serra, and the parish today comprises both the Basilica and the Old Mission. The present church’s cornerstone was laid in 1913 by Reverend P. J. Cummins, and its first Holy Mass was offered on Christmas Day 1918. In 1952, Pope Pius XII honored the parish church with the title of Basilica. Mission Dolores describes itself as a welcoming Catholic community called to live out the message of Christ in love and service to all people.
