About SGI-USA
The Soka Gakkai International-USA (SGI-USA) in Santa Monica is part of a global community-based network of more than 11 million people practicing the humanistic philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism, centered on respect for the dignity of life. As the most diverse Buddhist community in the United States, SGI-USA members engage in daily practice by chanting "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo" and reciting portions of the Lotus Sutra in their homes, then gather monthly for neighborhood discussion meetings to study Buddhist principles and share experiences of applying Buddhism to life's challenges. The organization is committed to dialogue and nonviolence, with members involved in peace activities including human rights education, nuclear weapons abolition efforts, and sustainable development initiatives. SGI-USA represents a contemporary expression of Nichiren Buddhism rooted in the Lotus Sutra, emphasizing individual empowerment and the belief that all people are capable of attaining enlightenment in this lifetime through what founder Tsunesaburo Makiguchi called a "human revolution."
