Episcopal Churches

The Episcopal Church is the American branch of the worldwide Anglican Communion. It combines Catholic liturgical tradition with Protestant theology, governed by bishops while valuing congregational participation and theological breadth.

Founded: Organized in America in 1789 after independence from England; roots in the Church of England (1534)

Governance: Episcopal (bishop-led) — Led by bishops who oversee dioceses. The General Convention (clergy and laity together) sets policy. The Presiding Bishop leads nationally. Each parish has a rector and vestry.
