About First African Baptist Church
First African Baptist Church in historic downtown Savannah was constituted in December 1777 and describes itself as “The Oldest Continuous Black Church in North America.” Led by Rev. Thurmond Neil Tillman, the congregation’s mission is “Seeking God. Shaping lives. Serving the world.” Sunday mornings include Empowerment Hour, the church’s Sunday School, followed by the Worship Experience, which is also shared on Facebook Live. Bible study is offered twice on Thursdays, with “Walking through the Word” at midday and “Growing in the Word” in the evening. The church also offers history tours connected to its long place in Savannah’s religious and cultural story.
