About St George Orthodox Church
St. George Orthodox Church in Cedar Rapids traces its roots to 1899, when Saint Raphael visited the Syrian immigrant community and inspired them to establish a permanent place of worship. The parish was officially founded in 1914 and has grown to become one of the earliest Orthodox parishes west of the Mississippi River. Today, the church serves its community through regular liturgical worship, educational programs for youth including Sunday School and Camp St. George, and extensive charitable outreach both locally and internationally. The parish has invested deeply in creating a beautiful worship space, including a stunning Byzantine-style church building completed in 1992 with a golden dome, and a remarkable stone iconostasis installed in 2012. St. George welcomes visitors to experience Orthodox Christian worship and explore the rich spiritual traditions of the Eastern Church.
