About Independence Visitors' Center
The Independence Visitors' Center, located at 937 W Walnut Street in Independence, Missouri, is operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to help guests explore the rich history of the faith in the region. The facility features both guided and self-guided exhibits that connect visitors with the Church's journey from its beginnings in New York through its significant time in Missouri, including teachings on the plan of salvation and the modern Church. Guests begin with self-guided exhibits on the main floor covering Church organization, the Book of Mormon, and family teachings, then experience a guided tour beginning at the Christus statue that leads to historical exhibits about the Church's presence in Independence. The center, which was dedicated in 1971, sits on land originally purchased by the Church in 1904 as part of the broader effort to establish Independence as a center of faith and community. The facility is fully accessible with elevator access, wheelchair accommodations, and amenities including restrooms, drinking fountains, and a children's play area.
