About Saint Joseph Sisters

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation of more than 500 sisters with deep historical roots tracing back to 17th-century France. Founded in 1650 in Le Puy, France, the congregation arrived in Saint Louis, Missouri in 1836 and established their presence in Philadelphia in 1847. The sisters are dedicated to their founding charism of unioning love—bringing neighbor to neighbor and neighbor to God—through spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Their ministries have evolved over nearly two centuries to address urgent contemporary challenges, serving the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable across twelve states. Today, the sisters continue their mission of addressing critical needs in society while inviting associates and partners in mission to join their spiritual community.
