About St Nicholas Greek Church
St. Nicholas Greek Church is a Christian Orthodox parish in Portsmouth, founded in 1931. Its history is tied to the city’s Greek immigrant community, beginning with the first Greek immigrant who settled in Portsmouth in 1893. The parish purchased the vacant Cabot Street School in 1933 and converted it into the first St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, then moved to its present Andrew Jarvis Drive location in 1971. Worship follows the Orthodox tradition, with Sunday Orthros and Divine Liturgy, along with Lenten services on Wednesday and Friday evenings. The parish continues to teach the Greek language and celebrate Greek religious holidays, and offers children’s ministry and youth group programs.
