About Saint Cecilia Church
Saint Cecilia Catholic Church in Kearny was established on September 1, 1893, by Bishop Wigger, who appointed Father Thomas J. Kernan as its first pastor. The church was built to serve the growing Catholic community of Scotch and Irish immigrants who had come to the area seeking work in the thread mills that flourished in the late 1800s. Designed by architect Henry J. King, the cornerstone was laid on October 29, 1893, and the church was dedicated the following year. Saint Cecilia holds a rich heritage rooted in the faith and perseverance of its early parishioners and clergy. Today, the parish continues to serve the Kearny community as a place of worship and spiritual growth grounded in Catholic tradition.
