About St Cecilia Roman Catholic Church
St. Cecilia Roman Catholic Church in Kearny was established in 1893, growing from the vision of Father Thomas J. Kernan and the support of Bishop Wigger during an era of immigration and industrial growth in the region. The parish originated to serve Irish and Scottish immigrants working in the thread mills, beginning as a small community worshiping in fields before the cornerstone was laid in October 1893 and the church was dedicated in April 1894. Named for Saint Cecilia, a virgin martyr devoted to Christ, the church embodies a tradition of faith and sacrifice that has endured through the generations. Today, St. Cecilia continues as a center of Catholic worship and community in Kearny, welcoming those who seek to deepen their relationship with God and the Church.
