The Traditionalist Church Hellenic Orthodox in Astoria, New York is part of the Church of the Genuine Orthodox Christians (GOC) of America, an autonomous Orthodox body tracing its roots to 1954 when Metropolitan Petros Astyfides founded the Cathedral of St. Markella in the neighborhood. This traditionalist community follows the old Julian calendar and maintains the apostolic succession and patristic theology of the original Christian Church established by Jesus Christ. The GOC resists modern ecumenism and preserves Orthodox worship, spirituality, and doctrine as transmitted through the bishops and fathers of the Church. Astoria's GOC parish serves the faithful across the Americas as part of a growing communion that now encompasses 58 parishes and missions, multiple monasteries and convents, and numerous clergy throughout North and South America under Metropolitan Demetrius of America.
