About Sisters of Saint Joseph
The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation with deep roots in American religious life, tracing their origins to seventeenth-century France and arriving in Philadelphia in 1847. Based at their motherhouse in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood, the congregation comprises approximately 500 Catholic sisters who embody their founding charism of unioning love—connecting neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. Throughout their history, the sisters have responded to urgent social needs through diverse ministries including education, healthcare, orphan care, and community service, earning recognition for their willingness to undertake whatever work best serves the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Today, the sisters continue this mission across twelve states, guided by their commitment to spiritual and corporal works of mercy and to addressing the critical challenges facing the church and world. Their work is rooted in contemplative life and a vision of solidarity with all people.
