About New Skete Monks
New Skete Monasteries is a community of Eastern Orthodox monks and nuns dedicated to monastic life since 1966, located in the Taconic Mountains near Cambridge, New York. The community embraces the evangelical virtues of poverty, chastity, and obedience, seeking to live out early Christian monasticism in a contemporary American context. Visitors are warmly welcomed to join in daily prayer, explore the monastery grounds and hiking trails, attend services, and experience the quiet beauty of monastic worship. The monks operate internationally recognized dog breeding and training programs, while the nuns support their community through a celebrated cheesecake bakery. Both communities offer spiritual retreats, guided group tours, and opportunities for visitors to participate in the rich liturgical life of the Eastern Orthodox Church.
First-Time Visitor Info for New Skete Monks
Dress Code: Modest, respectful attire is appropriate; monks and nuns wear Riassas (monastic choir robes) over regular clothes for liturgical services. Service Format: Daily cycle of matins and vespers, with Divine Liturgy on Sundays and feast days, sung and chanted in English with inclusive language. Visitor Tips: Day visits welcome year-round; reserve early for overnight retreats as guest rooms are limited. Group tours available (minimum 10 people) except Sundays, Mondays, and November 1–May 1. Pets not permitted except service animals (by prior appointment). Self-guided tour brochures and hiking trail maps available at the bell tower.
