About Saint Matthias Church
Saint Matthias Church in Wantagh is described by its own materials as a historically Black church. Its history is tied to the Episcopal Diocese of Long Island: St. Matthias was a mission of the diocese from 1904 until 2009, when the diocese declared the church closed. The congregation and the diocese are involved in a legal dispute over the property. The church’s story reflects a long local presence and an ongoing connection among congregants to this historic parish community.
