About Sisters Of St Joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic religious congregation with deep roots in American history, tracing their spiritual lineage to seventeenth-century France. Founded in 1650 in Le Puy, France, the community arrived in Philadelphia in 1847 and has since grown to over 500 members ministering across twelve states. Guided by their charism of unioning love—bringing neighbor to neighbor and neighbor to God—the Sisters have worked in hospitals, schools, orphanages, and community services, responding to the needs of the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Today, the congregation continues this legacy of spiritual and corporal works of mercy, welcoming Associates in Mission and lay partners who share their commitment to unite all people with God and one another. Visitors and those seeking prayer support are invited to connect with the community through their Chestnut Hill motherhouse in Philadelphia.
