About Emmanuel Baptist Church
Emmanuel Baptist Church in Gastonia traces its beginning to May 14, 1969, when 20 people gathered for a prayer meeting under Reverend John G. Whitfield. The congregation first held worship services in a house on West Long Avenue and later met in the former Gastonia Gazette newspaper building. Its current campus developed in phases, with the first phase used for worship in February 1971, the second completed in 1978, and the third completed in 1996. Dr. Samuel H. Barber, Jr. served as pastor after Reverend Whitfield resigned in 1975. Reverend Kimberly D. Moore was elected Senior Pastor in 2008, the first woman elected Senior Pastor within the Gaston County Baptist Association.
