About Emmanuel Baptist Church
Emmanuel Baptist Church in Gastonia was organized and established on May 14, 1969, by 20 people gathered at a prayer meeting. Founded under the leadership of the late Reverend John G. Whitfield, the congregation first worshiped in a house on West Long Avenue before moving to the former Gastonia Gazette newspaper building. A later Phase III building project began on June 19, 1994, and was completed in 1996. Dr. Samuel H. Barber, Jr. served as pastor after Reverend Whitfield and led the church for 31 1/2 years. Reverend Kimberly D. Moore was elected Senior Pastor on November 8, 2008, and installed the following month.
