About Sisters Of St Joseph

The Sisters of Saint Joseph of Philadelphia is a Catholic congregation of more than 500 sisters whose origins trace to seventeenth-century France, where they were founded on the principle of uniting neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God. Established in Philadelphia in 1847, the congregation has ministered throughout the United States and beyond in hospitals, schools, orphanages, battlefields, and community services, always responding generously to the urgent needs of their time. Rooted in the charism of incarnate, unioning love and guided by Vatican II's call to return to their founding spirit, the sisters continue their mission of spiritual and corporal works of mercy, particularly serving the poor, marginalized, and vulnerable. Their motherhouse is located in the Chestnut Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, and their sisters live and work across twelve states. The congregation welcomes associates in mission—lay partners, married, widowed, or single persons—who share their commitment to this common calling of union with God and one another.
