Albright-Bethune United Methodist Church in State College carries a distinctive legacy spanning over a century of ministry. The congregation traces its roots to 1915, when an Evangelical Church was established to serve college students, and evolved through several mergers before becoming the vibrant faith community it is today. In 1993, two congregations—St. John's United Methodist Church and Bethune Memorial, a predominantly African American congregation founded in 1985—joined together, named after Jacob Albright, a Pennsylvania German preacher, and Mary McLeod Bethune, the renowned African American educator and civic leader. Today, Albright-Bethune UMC provides worship experiences that draw strongly from the African American tradition while remaining open and welcoming to worshipers of all cultures and ethnicities. The church emphasizes renewing faith through worship, serving the community through mission and ministry, and engaging in meaningful spiritual connection.
